Sometimes in the heat of the battle, it’s hard to remember that God has a plan for good. When our circumstances hurt (especially when they hurt for YEARS)— we can find ourselves asking, “Where is God in all of this??” Unfortunately, some of our modern day teachings in the church can perpetuate confusion and disappointment in God. And frankly, our instant gratification culture doesn’t help.

I had to learn a tough lesson as my husband and I spent over four years in a marital and financial firestorm: Sometimes God doesn’t rescue us, provide for us, heal us, or speak to us in the way OR the time-frame we think we need Him to. And that is His right. Sometimes He lets us lose things and sometimes He allows our suffering. But He’s ALWAYS working on something bigger than we realize.

It took daily strength, choice, and discipline, but I learned to focus on God’s eternal plan instead of my earthly plan. My personal motto became “THINK ETERNAL.”

When my husband and I were at odds, I remembered that we are eternal souls that are in covenant with one another. When my circumstances felt paralyzing, I gave myself a paradigm shift and focused on the things of heaven. It took some time to build this habit, but God moved heaven and earth to help me. It wasn’t just some flowery prose or a casual suggestion when He said:

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—THINK ABOUT such things. -Philippians 4:8

This is a strategy for enduring this broken, hurtful world. I can’t tell you the revelation I have had about PEACE since I have begun to “THINK ETERNAL.” We CAN be at peace in the storm. It’s not just a cliché. I pray strength, wisdom, and the desire to pursue peace over you and your household that we may all serve the LORD in every circumstance, in Jesus’ name!
