I’m not trying to be overly religious or rulesy with this one, but sometimes my friends like to enjoy certain parts of pop culture that make me uncomfortable. Ever been there? I’m just saying—if I don’t want my husband checking out another woman or looking at porn, why should I think it’s OK to watch Magic Mike or read 50 Shades of Grey??

If you’re ever in a situation where you need to say NO to a movie, book, tv show, or music, there’s no need to go all spooky spiritual and say you won’t watch for religious reasons. Your friend will likely feel judged and you might not be comfortable saying it. Instead, use the reasoning that you prefer to consume stuff that’s more positive. Positivity is a concept that’s very accepted in our culture and most people can understand and honor it. Perhaps if the conversation goes deeper (and certainly if the Holy Spirit prompts you!) you can share your faith and why you like to be cautious about what you put in your heart.

Above all elseguard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23

To keep your “No” simple and loving, here’s what I would say:

“I’m all about spending time together, but can we pick something a little more positive to do? I love (books/movies/tv/music) but I prefer to consume things that build me up! You know what I mean? Our culture is so full of negativity so I try to make an effort to only put in the positive when I get a chance. I find that it makes me happier and peaceful.”

You could even be more specific if you need to:

Sexual Content: “I feel like that (book/movie/show/music) has a lot of gratuitous sex and it’s just not necessary. Call me old fashioned but I prefer a more wholesome, positive theme.”

Violence:  “I feel like that (book/movie/show/music) has a lot of violence and these days I get enough of that watching the news!”

Language: “I feel like that (book/movie/show/music) has a lot of bad language and it kind of bugs me. Call me old fashioned but I prefer a more wholesome, positive theme.”
